Dr. Felix Librero, UP Open University (UPOU) Professor Emeritus and Former Chancellor, donated more than a hundred books and journals to the UPOU Library this August 2016. In his letter addressed to Dr. Melinda dela Peña Bandalaria, UPOU Chancellor, the books are considered classics in various disciplines while others are current and will be useful additional reading materials for UPOU students in various courses. A number of the books he donated to UPOU were on distance education and social scientific thinking.

In a brief interview with Dr. Librero, he mentioned that he has donated about 200 titles to UPOU. He has also made book donations to other libraries, particularly to the UPLB College of Development Communication where he was considered as one of the pioneers; and the Batanes National Science High School and the Itbayat Agricultural High School in Batanes, his hometown. He has donated more than a thousand titles in all. He also plans to donate books to the library of the Laguna State Polytechnic University in Los Baños where his sister currently teaches.

Some of the books he has donated are those given by the UPLB College of Agriculture and the Philippine Council for Agriculture and Aquatic Natural Resources Research and Development (PCAARRD). Some were also from the Asia Foundation. “These are classic resources especially for PhD students and researchers,” he stated. He wanted to donate his books so that more people will be able to benefit from them. The only books he kept were those containing articles he wrote, but duplicate copies have also been donated already.

Dr. Librero’s donated books and references will be accessible via the Online Public Access Catalogue (OPAC). His only request is a separate section known as “Librero Section” at the UPOU Library. (Anna Cañas-Llamas)
