UPOU Faculty and Staff Participate in ICOFE2016

Chancellor Melinda dela Peña Bandalaria leads the UPOU delegation to ICOFE2016.


Six faculty and staff members of the University of the Philippines Open University (UPOU) participated and presented papers at the Third Conference on Flexible Education (ICOFE2016) at the Open University of Hong Kong (OUHK) in Kowloon, Hong Kong on 6-8 July 2016.


The group was led by Dr. Melinda dela Peña Bandalaria, Chancellor of UPOU, who presented a paper entitled “Beyond Learning and Completion: A Search for a Development-oriented Model for MOOC(massive open online course)” Her study examines how successful UPOU is in using MOOC as tool for development to reach target learners, and what models for MOOCs can be recommended to fulfil its potential as a tool for development, among others.


Other paper presenters from UPOU included Vice-Chancellor for Academic Affairs Melinda Lumanta for the paper entitled “A Colloquium Approach to Determining Research Preparedness in a Graduate Programme Curriculum”; Asst. Prof. Reinald Adrian D.L. Pugoy for his paper with Asst. Prof. Rita Ramos entitled “Usability Evaluation of an Augmented Reality Application for English Communication in Nursing: Philippines and Thailand Perspectives”; Asst. Prof. Finaflor Taylan for her paper entitled “Deepening and Strengthening Social Work and Development Discourses through the Use of Webinars in Social Work Courses in UPOU”; Ms. Anna Cañas-Llamas, for the paper “Exploring the Web-based Project Management and Collaboration Tool: The UPOU Basecamp  Initial Experience” that she wrote with Assoc. Prof. Joane Serrano, Asst. Prof. Myra Almodiel and Asst. Prof. Roberto Figueroa, Jr.; and Asst. Prof. Myra Almodiel for her paper with Asst. Prof. Aurora Lacaste entitled “The Relationship Between Learning Style and the Use of a Facebook Group as a Learning Management System for Online Learners.” This paper was awarded the Excellent Paper Award (Special Commendation).


ICOFE2016 carries the theme “Innovative Pedagogy and Technology” and is hosted by OUHK at the Jubilee College, OUK in Ho Man Tin, Kowloon, Hong Kong. Some of the featured keynote speakers of the conference included Prof. Wing On Lee, Vice-President for Administration and Development of OUHK and Dr. Alan Bruce, CEO and Director of the Universal Learning Systems based in Dublin, Ireland. Prof. Lee spoke about “Open and Flexible Pedagogies: The Changing Roles of Teachers in the 21st Century,” while Dr. Bruce discussed the “Open Horizons and Global Citzenship: The Disruptive Innovation of Collaborative Pedagogy.”


Conference workshops were also held throughout the event, tackling “Emerging Technologies for Mobile, Online and Blended Learning” by Dr. Eva Tsang of OUHK and “Shaping Innovative and Inclusive Learning Communities; Lessons from the European Experience” by Dr. Alan Bruce. (Anna Cañas-Llamas)
